Day ZERO -- OMG, I'm unemployed!!!
Wow, for the first time, since the 2 days between White Motor Credit Corp closing their doors, and starting at Keithley Instruments, back in 1981, I am unemployed.
And I didn’t even update my Resume’… Well, it feels good. Not the part about walking away from friends I’ve gained over the last 25 years with the Office, but knowing I won’t be getting any more pages to do things, or working nights/weekends/etc., that feels good.
I just checked, and my corporate password is no longer valid. Guess that means it is official. The 11:07 message saying links were down in test, will be the last one forever..
The 4 hours I was at the Office this morning were filled with good-byes and best wishes. I even got visits from people I barely see.
The “off-boarding” wasn’t as horrid an experience as I expected. H.R. reps were professional, and answered questions to their best ability. The 8 of us were out within 20 minutes.
I signed / initialed any paperwork required, and got copies. As an old-fart, the feds require I get 7 days to change my mind. While I didn’t like some of the wording in some of the disclosures, I certainly am not giving up my small severance to make a statement that nobody would hear.
I did make a small “statement” today, by my choice of attire. This is the first time I’ve ever worn a corporate shirt to the Office (or anywhere else), and I wore my 5 year, 10 year, 15 year, and 20 year pins, along with other silly pins they’ve given us over the years.
I even added a few of the various Corporate “Culture” cards they’ve expected us to learn when they decided the prior “culture” wasn’t working.
Quite frankly, while the shirt more than large enough, it was very ill-fitting and uncomfortable. I wonder if the ones in the last few years are any better? This is probably 8-10 years old.
Oh, and I did celebrate by leaving the off-boarding meeting opening that final Root Beer from the wall.
So, that’s the big blog entry for today. I have some things I want to get done on my first day off.
Best of luck to all of the remaining employees at the Office, and to those that left today.
