03-20-2025 -- Spring has sprung - as Winter returns
Howdy all. Yes, today is the first day of spring, officially. But, the day begins around 50 as the temperature, with moderate winds that are to increase again, and rain that will turn to snow by tonight as the temps fall all day to the 20s overnight. Spring? Winter? Yep, it is both.
However, yesterday was the 2nd of a 2 day “spring” visit. Temperatures were around the 65-70 area. And enough sunshine that I was glad to get outside and begin gardening.
I managed to till almost all of the raised garden beds. I have about in the area of 250 - 300 square foot total of raised garden beds. I didn’t till the strawberry beds, or the raspberry/blueberry beds, for obvious reasons. I left a 3x4 cucumber bed, and 3 2x4 tomato beds to be done later. There is fertilizer in the cucumber bed, but not in the little tomato beds,,, yet.
I planted approximately 40 seed potatoes into one 4x8 bed and another 4x4 bed. And I planted easily 100 onion sets in a variety of 1/2 beds. I will plant the other parts of those beds with other crops. Onions are good at chasing away bugs! Also planted one packet of carrots (split into 2 spots).
You saw that I put some artificial flowers out front. Well, while working in garage and house, I found a few dozen artificial Mum clusters and put them out front in a couple of small barrel planters that will eventually have real flowers in them again this year.
Also managed to replace batteries in any security cameras outside that needed them. And got the last of the functioning whirligigs back outside and hopefully pushed deep enough in the ground to stay when the next set of 45 plus mph winds hit Sunday.
Yep, more high wind days coming soon.
Oh, and I found my metal butterfly that dislodged from the deck during the first huge snowfall. It is back on the rail.
And speaking of that snowfall, the hedges along the north side of the deck, are pretty much bent over and flattened from that weight. They use to rub against the deck rail and reach through and over it. Well now there is a pathway between the base of the hedges and the deck ?basement? that is wide enough for me to walk through it.
My lawn service company will likely need to prune the hedges back to like 1-2 foot tall from 5 foot tall, to allow them to grow back over the next few years. If they can’t be pruned to regrow, they may need to be removed. Ugh. I would prefer that they could Enjoy Life.
