5-9-2022 -- Has Spring begun finally?

Howdy to all,

Last night the temperatures stayed above 40 for the first time in a week or so. A solid 40.1 freedom degrees. Yeah, not great. But so much better than lately. Most of the time, so far this year, if the night time temps were above 40, it was the high for the day, and lots of winds, rains and/or snow came during the day-time hours.

Not only was there no freeze last night, but the temps quickly rose into the 50s and even 60s. It got quite warm (85-90) in the greenhouse tent. I had to open the window flaps.

The porncast for the next week is to be even better. (“porncast” — a forked up forecast — the normal for around here!!).

Anyhow, Kitty let me know this morning she felt Spring was here. She kept running from the window, to me, and cried. So I opened them up (they are screened) and she was happily sitting in the sunshine watching the birdies and squirrels at the feeders.

I decided it was time to hope the freezes are done and handle my gardens. I had to replace a couple of pepper plants outside, and have a few more tomato plants to use as replacements yet.

Sadly I don’t have anymore squash plants in the house. I had to move them outside a couple weeks ago because they were starting to vine and just had no place to go. And they all crapped out.

Poor squash plants. I barely knew them!!

This bed has squash seeds (summer and zucchini) on this side, and cucumbers on the backside. There may be some seedlings popping. Either that, or weeds!!

The outside tomatoes are doing so-so. Some good, some not so good. But I think they will survive.

These 3 tomato plants are hanging in there. The group of 9 I showed last blog are still doing fine.

That’s a legacy spinach plant near the middle — last year’s spinach grows better that this year’s!!

This year’s outside spinach and green onions, are barely starting.

Green onions on left, spinach on right.

Some radish plants that have grown, even in the cold.

You might even see some carrot shoots. Either that, or more weeds!!

Strawberry plants are getting ready to start sending out shoots. They survived.

The berry bed of raspberry and blueberry plants is also coming back.

Should be attracting bees and critters soon.

Meanwhile, by the greenhouse tent and the cold frames, there also has been activity.

I had to take the covers off of the potato cold frames because the plants were pushing the lids upward. They took off in last couple of weeks, and it was time to add more soil around them.

Those are yellow/white potatoes.

Those are red potatoes. And notice a couple of strays between the frames??

You can see through the glass on the front of the frame, a few extra inches of soil has been added to hill around the plants.

In the mini greenhouse, the basil clumps I planted, have mostly decided they should pass on. But, the seeds are sprouting. The back side of the mini greenhouse has spinach — I think!!

Those are the garlic plants from last year. And I tossed some radish seeds around them. Also some leftover onion sets in the backside of the cold frame.

Onion sets of red, yellow, purple onions..

Different varieties of spinach. Not absolutely sure the clump on right edge, middle, is spinach. I guess I’ll have to taste it to find out?

Are you awake still???????????????????????????

And then the greenhouse. The bed for cucumbers seems to have not so much as grown a single seedling. Will add more seeds soon if they don’t sprout. No picture of nothing!!

Outside of greenhouse are leftover peppers and tomato plants. In case they are needed.

Inside, well, take a look.

Greenhouse pepper plants are doing decent.

Greenhouse tomatoes are surviving. Just not great. Hopefully the spring temps will help.

Barely hanging on..

Plants are growing along side the house and even blooming.

Truly Spring look!!

So, we are finally beginning spring. Hope it lasts as long as winter, and then summer equally as long.

This guy thinks spring is here too..

I am so glad to see the sunshine again. Really need it. And Kitty loves it. Rather than end with a picture of her, I’ll end with a picture of what she likes to watch to

Enjoy Life

Kitty complained. Says she has to be here. She’s too cute to not be.
